Flooded basement with standing water before water damage cleanup

What to Do When Your Basement Floods: A Step-by-Step Guide

A flooded basement can go from an inconvenience to serious property damage very quickly. Whether the water came from heavy rain, a failed sump pump, a burst pipe, or an appliance leak, taking the right steps immediately can help limit the damage and make cleanup safer.

If your basement is flooding right now, here's what to do.

1. Make Sure It's Safe to Enter

Before walking into a flooded basement, consider electrical hazards. If standing water may have reached outlets, appliances, electrical panels, or other electrical equipment, don't enter the water. Contact the appropriate professional for help.

If the flooding involves sewage or potentially contaminated water, avoid direct contact with it.

2. Stop the Source of the Water If Possible

If a burst pipe or plumbing leak is causing the flooding and you can safely reach your main water shutoff, turn off the water.

For sump pump failures, heavy rainfall, sewage backups, or situations where you can't identify the source, professional help may be needed.

3. Start Water Removal Quickly

Standing water should be removed as soon as safely possible. Water can spread underneath flooring, into drywall, insulation, baseboards, and other building materials even when the visible flooding doesn't look severe.

Professional water extraction equipment can remove large amounts of water much more efficiently than household equipment.

4. Don't Assume the Basement Is Dry When the Water Is Gone

Removing standing water is only the beginning.

Moisture can remain inside walls, floors, framing, and other materials. Professional moisture detection, air movers, and dehumidification can be used to identify and dry affected areas.

This is why structural drying is an important part of the water-damage restoration process.

5. Document the Damage

Take photos and videos of the affected areas before throwing damaged items away when it's safe to do so. Keep records of damaged property and any emergency work performed.

If you plan to file an insurance claim, this documentation may be helpful when communicating with your insurance company.

6. Get Professional Help When You Need It

Large amounts of standing water, sewage contamination, water that has spread into walls or flooring, and flooding that can't be completely dried with household equipment are situations where professional restoration may be appropriate.
